Wominjeka Yearmenn Bunjilaka: Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Melbourne Museum.

Each year the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Melbourne Museum hosts three Koorie community exhibitions showcasing the many artistic talents of our Victorian Koorie community.

        On Exhibition: Two Laws

This exhibition looks at ongoing debates about Indigenous knowledge, law and property in Australia. It invites thought about an autonomous future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
When Britain established legal control over Australia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, hundreds of Indigenous nations were subordinated to the crown. The colonisers did not recognise Indigenous legal systems. They usually believed Aboriginal people’s beliefs, religion and culture to be inferior to their own belief systems.

Indigenous Australians have resisted this domination over them from the beginning. People persisted with their own laws. Indigenous rights, in recent decades, have been recognised worldwide. Formal recognition of Indigenous customary law is now being called for.

      On Exhibition: Koori Voices

Revealing the history of Aboriginal people.
This exhibition celebrates the diversity of a culture that has withstood the impact of colonisation for nearly two hundred years. It reveals a history of Victoria that has been hidden, even denied, for over 170 years.

Koori Voices tells the stories of Aboriginal people since the arrival of the British in the 1830s. It also looks at the impact of colonisation and the way in which Aboriginal people have struggled to maintain their culture. Some stories speak of brutality, oppression and hardship. Other stories recall the struggles and joys of daily life.

Immigration Museum

The Immigration Museum explores the stories of real people from all over the world who have migrated to Victoria.
Located in the Old Customs House in the heart of the city, the museum re-creates the real-life stories of coming to Australia with a rich mix of moving images, personal and community voices, memories and memorabilia. From the reasons for making the journey, to the moment of arrival in a new country, and the impact on indigenous communities, these stories are sometimes sad, sometimes funny, but always engaging. The result is a thought-provoking and moving experience.

On Exhibition: Survival of a Culture: Kurds in Australia

This exhibition explores how the Kurdish culture has survived through adversity, invasion, and division of the Kurds’ traditional lands. Survival of a Culture: Kurds in Australia examines the traditions at the core of the Kurdish culture that have enabled it to survive, and which Kurds proudly maintain in Australia today. A variety of objects will be on display, including traditional costumes, instruments, hand-made carpets, hand-woven crafts and pewter ware.
